Four different pillars sustainably support and shape competitive sports in Oberwiesenthal.

The most important pillar is the Oberwiesenthal Federal Training Center (Bundesstützpunkt Oberwiesenthal) and its sponsoring body, the Olympiaförderkreis Leistungszentrum Oberwiesenthal e.V. (Olympic Training Center), which currently provides educational and training facilities for 140 up‑and‑coming and professional winter sports athletes. Elite sports training is provided in six Olympic disciplines – cross‑country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, biathlon, alpine skiing and luge – by around 20 full‑time trainers. Numerous sportsmen and women from the Oberwiesenthal Federal Training Center have represented the town at the Olympic Games and international competitions, making Oberwiesenthal famous all over the world.

Close collaboration with the Eliteschule des Wintersports Oberwiesenthal (Oberwiesenthal Elite Winter Sports School) enables talented youngsters to be provided with a school education alongside their elite sports training. In order to ensure the optimal combination of training and education, the Federal Training Center and the sports boarding school provide a home from home for winter sports athletes on the Fichtelberg.

Our local clubs make an important contribution to supporting up‑and‑coming young athletes. They pave the way for children and young people, providing all-round training in a variety of winter sports disciplines. The WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal e.V. club covers cross‑country skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, ski jumping and luge. The ASC Oberwiesenthal e. V. club is responsible for training young talent in the alpine skiing disciplines.

Recent years have seen much investment in the Fichtelberg training facilities. The training facilities and competition venues have been modernized, expanded and brought together for marketing purposes under the name of Training Center Oberwiesenthal. Many national and international athletes prepare for major competitions in the town’s sports facilities.
