In recent years, Oberwiesenthal has made an impressive name for itself as a highly reliable host of large‑scale international winter sports events. The WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal e. V. winter sports club hosted the Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships in March 2020, with over 700 young athletes from 42 countries.

In summer the FIS Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix is very popular. With more than 10,000 spectators at the Fichtelbergschanze jumps and the roller‑ski course through the town center, the event is a real crowd puller. This is particularly good news for the world‑class athletes, too, who are spurred on to deliver their best performances by the cheering crowds.

Another summer sporting highlight is the Vier Hübel Tour – a very special mountain biking event. Originally started by a couple of mountain biking fanatics as a round trip covering four summits of the Erzgebirge, the tour will celebrate its 25th birthday in 2021. The Vier Hübel Tour is organized by the Oberwiesenthaler Sportverein 1990 e. V. sports club. With around 100 volunteers every year, the tour is an amazing experience for all the cycling enthusiasts who tackle the 90-kilometre course.

In winter the focus largely shifts to competitions in the Sparkassen-Skiarena and on the Fichtelbergschanze and the Fichtelberg downhill runs. With everything from regional championships for budding young athletes to international competitions, you can watch high‑level sporting performance up‑close almost every weekend throughout the winter months. But the Wintersportzentrum Oberwiesenthal winter sports center also has plenty to offer for grassroots sportspeople. The Erzgebirge Ski Marathon, for example, attracts large numbers of winter sports fans to the Fichtelberg every year.
