Exhibition Mines

Mining was and remains a part of the culture of the Erzgebirge. The oldest form of obtaining ore was extensively developed here in the Erzgebirge especially, because valuable materials such as silver, tin, bismuth and cobalt ores can all be found here. The importance of mining is even reflected in the region’s name: “Erzgebirge” [literally “the ore mountains”]. The centuries-old tradition has made the Erzgebirge into a unique cultural landscape. The history of the Erzgebirge and the mining culture, which is nearly 800 years old, can be experienced by our visitors today in the numerous monuments to technological developments, exhibition mines and museums.

Besucherbergwerk St. Christoph

Far above the Schwarzwassertal you will find the mining facility of St. Christopher of Breitenbrunn in the Erzgebirge. Mining began here around 1400, and the mine at St. Christoph was first mentioned in official documents in 1558.

In the tunnels at St. Christopher you can experience something of the mining history of the Erzgebirge region, participate in guided mineral hunting or visit the former subterranean mineworks.

Groups must register in advance.

Besucherbergwerk/Mineralogisches Museum Zinngrube Ehrenfriedersdorf

In the “Zinngrube” [tin mine] exhibition mine, guests in the visitors’ mine learn about mining tin and silver ore from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Go down to 100 m below the surface. The trip in the mining railway is a real experience!

From February to November, trips into the “Asthma healing tunnels” can be arranged on request. This is especially used by patients with upper respiratory diseases.

With the Erzgebirgscard you have free entry to the exhibition mine and the Mineralogical Museum.

Dorothea-Stolln / Himmlisch Herr

Witness to 500 years of mining history, this miner’s jewel was already producing silver in 1530. Silver finds in the 16th century were especially lucrative. Technical equipment and machines still tell the story of the development from manual work in the 16th century to machine-driven mining in the post-war era.

You have a wide selection of tours and boat rides through the brick and stonework arches in the Dorothea Stolln/Himmlisch Herr exhibition mine. Special tours can only be arranged on request.
